My Ideal Christmas Day

My Ideal Christmas Day

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates!! Christmas Day is one of my favorite days of the whole year. I just love being cozy and hanging out with my family, playing board games and watching Christmas movies -- the whole nine yards! So, because I'm spending today doing just that, I thought I'd draw myself up an ideal schedule for Christmas -- much like Buddy the Elf's "First we'll make snow angels for two hours, then we'll go ice skating, then we'll eat a whole roll of Tollhouse Cookie Dough as fast as we can, and then we'll snuggle!" Here's my version of the Ideal Christmas Day. Enjoy!

10 AM: WAKE UP + BREAKFAST!

It's nice to sleep in on Christmas, although I remember when I was little I'd wake up SUPER early to see if I could catch Santa! My family usually does the big dinner on Christmas Eve, so we're definitely in food comas the night before and it's nice to sleep it all off! Plus, by that time, we're pretty hungry -- this is what I'm planning to make for Christmas morning. Looks sooooo yummy, and how great is it that it can be made the day before!

11 AM: LET'S HEAD TO THE TREE.

I actually picked out our current tree last year -- it's a black artificial tree! I just think that it's so classy and elegant, not to mention different from most of the trees you'll see this season. Plus, all the ornaments really pop -- and we like to put little gifts in the tree branches, too!

After we distribute the gifts, we go around in a circle so that every person opens one gift at a time. Here's a tip: be sure to write down gifts as they're opened, so you don't accidentally forget any thank-you notes later!!

After all the gifts have been open and wrapping paper has been cleaned up (my cat always steals a couple ribbons in addition to her presents!), we usually set aside a few hours to use our new gifts. Whether it's reading a new book (my mom), playing a new video game (my brother), or practicing a new makeup look (yours truly!), it's fun to really get to use your presents when they're brand-new. Plus, we usually stay in the same room, and just being together is part of what makes it all so special :)

This year, I know we'll be playing this Bob's Burgers Monopoly that my brother and I bought my dad. Board games are ideal for Christmas Day -- when else do you really have the time to play with your family?

2 PM: LUNCH + MOVIES!

My family is a huge fan of frozen pizzas -- seriously SO convenient and we don't have to wait for pizza to be delivered! While we watch a Christmas movie (or two -- our favorites are It's a Wonderful Life, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and, of course, Elf) we'll most likely pop in one of these California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizzas.

6 PM: FONDUE FUN!

The Rodriguez-Katsulos extended family is obsessed with fondue. What can I tell you...there's just something so fun about getting to dip your dessert in chocolate!! (Or, you know, bread in cheese, but by the end of Christmas Day, we really just want some chocolate.)

We use this Cuisinart Electric Fondue Maker -- especially if you have small kids, I recommend getting one like this that doesn't have a flame! Obviously these are less dangerous, plus it's way easier to control the temperature...nobody wants burnt chocolate. We dip whatever kinds of fruit we have on hand, plus pretzel sticks, Rice Krispie treats, pound cake, marshmallows...one of the best things about fondue is that it's super customizable! It's also such an out-of-the-ordinary special treat that we always look forward to doing it on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, the two days of the year we make sure to pull the fondue pot out.

We usually spend over an hour snacking and just chatting before getting ready for bed -- there are some great deals to be had the day after Christmas, so I know at least my mom and I will be up bright and early come December 26!

Until next time ~

XOXO, Maria
