My Top 5 Romantic Comedies!
Stuck for ideas on what to do for Valentine's Day? Perhaps a movie marathon would fit the bill -- lots of romcoms, some popcorn, some candy...Whether you'll be spending Valentine's Day with someone special, a group of friends, or just relaxing on your own, here are my top 5 romantic comedies to get you started!
I know, I know, how could a classic like Roman Holiday end up fifth out of five on my list? But listen, there's a lot of romantic comedies that didn't make this list (partially because I don't quite consider them romantic comedies, to be honest -- like, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of my favorite movies, but it's more of a family movie than a romance plot in my mind!). Plus, I saw this movie for the first time most recently out of all the other movies, AND it doesn't have a happy ending! Wow. How did this even end up on this list?
Oh yeah. 1) All the amazing clothes Audrey Hepburn wears, 2) Audrey Hepburn's hair, 3) Audrey Hepburn herself, and 4) ROME!!!!
At #4 on the list is Sweet Home Alabama. When I first started watching this movie, I thought I didn't like it, but as the movie progressed, I realized with half-horror, half-unbridled joy that the reason I wasn't a huge fan was because it was TOO REAL. Much like protagonist Melanie, I, too, am from the South, and tried to escape up North (alright, Washington D.C. isn't THAT north, but still). I also thought I'd go to school in Boston and live up North after that. But your home is always your home, and like they say, you can take the girl out of Texas....or, make that Alabama!
Confessions of a Shopaholic honestly should get extra points, because not only is it one of my favorite movies ever, the book series by Sophie Kinsella is probably one of my top three book series of all time. Every single one of her Shopaholic books is like settling down in a warm blanket with your favorite snack -- so, so comforting. And, for once, the movie actually lived up to the book (of course, the books are better because there's more of them, LOL)! Plus, Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy are just too funny to handle, and their chemistry is soooo heart eyes emoji I can't even explain. Sigh. See, when I'm this in love with #3 on the list, you know numbers 2 and 1 are going to be AWESOME.
And for proof, here's #2!! Mamma Mia! is probably my favorite musical ever. Come on, you just can't help but be happy when you hear ABBA start playing! And yes, yes, I know Pierce Brosnan can't sing a note, but he is my favorite James Bond, and he's so dreamy in this movie. Plus, much like Roman Holiday, Mamma Mia! gets major points for the gorgeous scenery and outfits. I also love how easily the movie tells the story of two generations, focusing equally on Sophie's wedding and Donna's love life. SO, when I heard there would be a sequel (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) coming out, with the original cast returning, PLUS Lily James as young Donna...what great news. I'm 100% going to see it in theaters!!
And finally, the pièce de résistance of romantic comedies. The Proposal. UGH. It just has EVERYTHING I LOVE about a romantic comedy!! Beautiful scenery? Check, Sitka, Alaska (I always hear it in Sandra Bullock's voice, "Sitka....Alaska?"). Chemistry for DAYS between the two leads? Um, CHECK, Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock need to be STOPPED for being so cute and silly during this movie -- the scene where they're singing "It Takes Two" is just iconic. Adorable little puppy? CHECK. Poor Kevin nearly gets carried off by an eagle, all in the name of adorableness. Plus, Betty White is there, and any movie without Betty White is no movie at all, I say!
Enjoy your Valentine's Day, no matter what your plans are -- and if you find yourself with some free time this February, check out one of these amazing romantic comedies!
Until next time ~
